A Vernon bagel company will celebrate its grand opening over the long weekend with a block party, jazz music, and no shortage of Montreal-style bagels.

Bonsai Bagels’ will host the festivities at3002-41st Avenue on Saturday, May 21 from 12-4 p.m.

With the event, owner and baker Loren Letourneau says he’s giving back to a community that helped him through the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are excited to open our doors wide and to welcome spring at last,” said Letourneau. “With this event, we aim to bring some ‘joie de vivre’ to our neighbourhood by hosting the Green Dragon Jazz Trio and selling artisanal bagels, in-house made cream cheeses and local beer and wine.”

Weather permitting, the event will turn the parking lot at the bagel shop into a block party with face painting, prizes and games to enjoy.

“Bring your own lawn chair,” Letourneau advised.

Bonsai Bagels specializes in bagels that are famous in Eastern Canada for their chewy consistency, irregular shape with a slightly sweet taste.

As Letourneau can attest, there may be no going back to mass-produced bagels after giving the Montreal style a taste.

Letourneau runs Bonsai Bagels with his wife Marisol in the former Tita’s Italian Bistro building on 41st Avenue. He’s thankful for his loyal customers and clients who have brought his bagels on board to elevate their baked offerings. After all, “elevating the everyday” is the company’s motto.
