Sometimes, good things can happen in the darkest of times.
Just ask Emily Triggs: at the height of the pandemic in 2021, she was nominated for both a Western Canada Music Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award for her sophomore recording Middletown (2019).
The album received a lot of airplay, in addition to rave reviews. Of course, touring to promote the album had to wait until venues reopened, and she has been hitting the road ever since.
At her Vernon concert, she will be joined by Brady Enslow (guitar) and Darren Young (stand-up bass). The trio will be playing songs from Middletown, her first album When Guinevere Went Under (2015), and new material being recorded for release in early 2024.
Triggs studied music at Montreal’s Dawson College, then headed south to Elkins, West Virginia. There she studied a minor in music and immersed herself in the Appalachian folk music culture.
Calgary was the next stop where she has broken more than a few guitar strings as a solo performer, along with singing as the sweet side of the House Doctors, or as one of the seraphs in Magnolia Buckskin.
Triggs’ style can best be described as a blend of folk, folk-rock and Canadiana/Americana. She loves to introduce new sounds into folk music, adding new elements that make the experience very creative and fun.
“I’m pushing the boundaries of what I consider folk – and bringing in influences I’ve had over the years,” she says.
Those influences span the Deep South with the likes of Lead Belly, through Texas blues, strains from the Appalachian Mountains, to her early years in French Canada.
“At the end of the night, I’d like the audience to feel they’ve had a bit of a cross-Canada journey, a Canadian experience. That we’ve connected and shared an intimate experience together,” Triggs says.
The Emily Triggs Trio plays for the Vernon Folk-Roots Music Society Saturday, June 3 at the Vernon Jazz Club. Tickets are available at Expressions of Time, TicketSeller, or at the door (if available) $30.
