Calling all film buffs, the Vernon Community Arts Centre has announced it is hosting a film appreciation course taught by local filmmaker Jim Elderton.
Starting Wednesday, Elderton, creator of locally-made documentaries such as Sveva, Imprisoned, will lead the 10-week evening class at the arts centre.
“Everyone watches movies, everyone has opinions, and everyone has a voice,” said Elderton. “Each evening a different type of movie will be explored, with numerous classic sequences screened for comparison, clarification and discussion.”
Elderton will choose from his collection of more than 300 films, and at each session, scenes from up to 10 movies will shown. The Vernon Film Society is also cooperating, giving access to the Videoscape movie collection held at Vernon Public Art Gallery.
Each film screened in conjunction with the course will also be shown at the Vernon Towne Cinema as a special matinee presentation the following day.
“The Towne’s new digital equipment allows them to screen classic movies no longer available on 35-milimetre film,” explained Elderton, adding viewers will be exposed to thrillers, comedies, dramas, fantasy, sci-fi, documentaries, romances and more.
The final film for discussion will be chosen by the students, he added.
