The Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra is starting its annual spring concert series in Vernon this weekend. The performances feature the 80 talented musicians of the OSYO, performing classical pieces for guests attending concerts in Vernon, Penticton and Kelowna.
“Our youth musicians are so talented that they will impress every music lover and attendees will truly enjoy this show,” said OSYO music co-director Dennis Colpitts. “These musicians work so hard and love what they do and many will make performing in an orchestra part of their lifetime careers.”
Featured soloists for the concert series include Nicole Michalewicz on violin and Rei Ikeda on trombone. The program opens with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and continues with Georg Christoph Wagenseil’s Concerto for Alto Trombone in E-flat major, Camille Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for Violin and Orchestra, and closes with Alexander Borodin’s Symphony No. 2.
“It brings everyone so much enjoyment to see how these musicians grow during their time with the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra,” said Colpitts. “They learn so much from each other and their mentors, their hard work and dedication will show at their performances.”
The OSYO performs Saturday, April 30 at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Church (3300 Alexis Park Dr., Vernon). Tickets are general admission and are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth, and $5 children 12 and under, available online at www.okanagansymphony.com as well as at the door.
