The last showing of the spring season for the Vernon Film Society is Monday at the Towne Theatre.
Filmgoers who attended the film society’s last movie, Of Gods and Men, and who continue to discuss that movie will be interested in In a Better World as it has similar themes.
This Academy Award winner for best foreign film tells the story of two Danish families brought together as a result of the newly formed friendship between their sons, 10 year old boys who are coping with their own problems of grief and being bullied.
Susanne Bier, the director, co-wrote the screenplay with Anders Thomas Jenson, who also wrote another film society favourite, After the Wedding.
The story telling seems effortless and some of the images are gorgeous.
The main story concerns friendship, and the boys reaction to bullying. A parallel story outlines one of the boys’ father’s medical work in Africa and his dealing with African warlords and the ensuing violence
Once again, there is a moral dilemma: should one always help people in need and is revenge a proper course of action?
Moviegoers are going to be coming out of this film questioning why are we not living in harmony when we have all the advancements of a technical age?
Whether we are young and starting to make our way into a wider world, or involved in humanitarian work and seeing the results of ongoing violence, will it ever be possible to change the actions of those around us?
In a Better World will be shown at the Towne Theatre Monday at 5:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and one week ahead at the theatre and the Bean Scene coffee house for $7.
The Vernon Film Society summer schedule of three movies in July and August is now available at the Bean Scene, Vernon library and the Vernon Public Art Gallery, as well as at the Towne Theatre.
