Vernon music students are going beyond playing O Canada in celebration of the B.C. Registered Music Teachers Association’s Canada Music Week, taking place this week around the province.

Students taught by members of the Vernon Registered Music Teachers Association (RMTA) are celebrating the best of Canadian music, culture and creativity with a live performance Saturday, Nov. 26 at All Saints Anglican Church.

“This year, we will be featuring a brand new opportunity for Vernon students to perform their original compositions,” said Vernon RMTA vice president Emerald Holt, who put forth the idea.

“This new opportunity has encouraged and cultivated students’ creativity to compose and perform their original songs.”

In addition, there will be many other student performances of famous Canadian composers.

The Canada Music Week event is open to the public and is by donation to attend.

“We encourage the community to come support young Canadian composers and performers of Canadian music,” said Holt.

Saturday’s performance starts at 7 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church , 3205 27th St., Vernon.
