It’s been eight months, but the debris from the July 2023 structure fire in downtown Vernon is finally getting cleaned up.

A report from city administration outlines the progress of a contractor hired to clean up the site.

“The work is being performed with moderate asbestos safety controls in place,” the report reads. “It is focused on the materials closest to the adjacent alleyway with the team being able to remove three to four bins of debris per day.”

The project is expected to be complete on, or around April 10, 2024.

Currently, there have been no updates on a cause for the fire and no suspects have been arrested.

The downtown blaze destroyed seven local businesses: Vernon Centre Pawn, The Cauldron Metaphysical Shop, Eunike Consignment, Jax & King Salon, Classy Canine Grooming, Deluxe Decor & Scenery and The Okanagan Eatery plus the Vernon Animal Food Bank.
