A man who reportedly went on two separate joyrides in Vernon Thursday night and early Friday morning, consequentially had two vehicles impounded after police tracked him down.

An officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP observed a vehicle travelling at high speeds through a residential neighbourhood on 27th Avenue around 10:45 p.m. on March 7. The officer stopped the vehicle which was found to be travelling more than 100 km/hr.

The 23-year-old driver was handed fines totalling $1,569 for excessive speed, failure to display N, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving contrary to restrictions, failure to signal, crossing a double solid line and operating an uninsured vehicle.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, but that didn’t stop the driver from hopping in another vehicle and continuing his fun run.

Less than four hours after the first incident, around 2:25 a.m. On March 8, officers responded to a report of an erratic driver near Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Officers located the vehicle, which had been spotted driving at a high rate of speed. Police intercepted the vehicle as it pulled into a driveway, and found the same man behind the wheel.

This time, the man received $788 in fines for again failing to display an N, failing to produce a driver’s licence, and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

All told, the man was slapped with $2,357 in fines.

“It’s ridiculous to see this type of behaviour and there’s no excuse for it,” said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “The fines issued are only the initial step in the process and the man could potentially face additional sanctions from the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.”
