Hedge fire sparked next to Vernon senior’s complex

Significant blaze Monday morning, firefighters quick to extinguish

Residents of a senior living complex are on high alert after a fire lit their hedges ablaze Monday.

Firefighters and RCMP were called to the Spruce Landing fire around 12 p.m. April 29.

Flames and smoke could be seen coming from a significant section of the hedge next to 25th Avenue.

But crews were quick to douse the blaze.

This is not the first time a fire has been sparked in the hedges, which separate the complex from the walking path and benches which are frequented by drug users.

A witness, Lynette Smith, who lives right next to where the blaze sparked, told The Morning Star that this has been an issue for years.

“We have been phoning the city to get this bench removed, because this has been such a big problem.”

Smith said that just a few weeks ago there was another fire meters away, and that drug users frequently hang out next to the bench. There is also a hollow set up within the bushes, littered with garbage, drug paraphernalia and other items.
