Vernon council has officially opened up its applications for discretionary grants.

These grants help support the enhancement and preservation of a positive quality of life for all residents, according to a release.

Applications can be submitted by email to the director of financial services at cfo@vernon.ca. The due date is no later than 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The awarding of grants is solely within council’s discretion. More information on eligibility requirements and applications can be found at vernon.ca/councilgrant.

There are typically two intake periods for the grants, one for the month of April as well as October.

Some examples of grant recipients in the past include:

•Archway Society for Domestic Peace: $10,000, to help renovate their existing space to be more functional.

•Family Resource Centre Society for the North Okanagan: $4,000, to expand their Refugee and Immigrant Outreach program.

•Kalamalka Highlander Pipe Band: $5,000, to purchase new traditional pipe band uniforms.

•Vernon & District Funtastic Sports Society: $15,000, to put towards operation of the event including fencing to eliminate the need to rent in the future.

Applicants must be community based, provide a service which is not provided by any other group, be a non-profit or registered society and not be in receipt of a City of Vernon grant in the current fiscal year. Organizations can only submit one application each calendar year.
