DIY Furnace Maintenance Checklist
- Clean or replace air filters: Dust is the enemy of all machinery, your furnace included. Did you know filters should be replaced every two to three months? “Some people don’t even know that a furnace has a filter. Our service technicians have seen some shockingly old filters absolutely covered in dust,” Fox says.
- Inspect the thermostat: Complete a visual inspection of wiring and look for loose or rusty connections. Any necessary repairs should be completed by a certified professional. Now is also a great time to check your thermostat settings — you may be able to save on energy bills with a small adjustment.
- Check ducts: Look for leaks and repair seams to improve your furnace’s efficiency.
- Inspect the blower: The fan on your furnace should spin freely, and fan blades should be clean. Remember to turn off your furnace before you do any work on the blower, and consult a professional if needed.
- Vacuum that dust: Turn your furnace off, and vacuum vents, burners and other parts to remove dust. Just be careful near delicate parts!
