Armstrong council proceeds with budget

It’s expected that council will consider three readings of the budget bylaw April 25.

Efforts are underway to minimize the tax burden in Armstrong.

City council and staff are currently working on the 2016 budget.

“Armstrong does a great job with our finances,” said Coun. Shirley Fowler.

The budget includes a three per cent hike in property taxes or $22 for the average home.

However, when a 6.7 per cent decrease to sewer fees and a slight hike to water and garbage fees are considered, the overall net impact is about $10.

“For the services we provide, we are bang on. We keep our reserves in good shape.”

Public input on the budget was received Monday.

“We had four people there and they had a look at it. There was nothing negative,” said Mayor Chris Pieper.

The proposed budget includes a 1.67 per cent salary increase for unionized staff and 1.65 per cent for non-union workers.

“Mayor and council settled at the cost of living at 1.1 per cent,” said Fowler.

“We’re proud of the work everyone does.”
