Backyard fire ban clarified

Enjoying a wood-burning fire in your backyard is still against the rules in Armstrong

Enjoying a wood-burning fire in your backyard is still against the rules in Armstrong.

Council gave three readings to the revised fire prevention bylaw, including for backyard campfires, Monday.

“It’s really no change from previous bylaws but the wording has been made more clear,” said Coun. Shirley Fowler.

“We haven’t allowed residential open burning for years because of air quality.”

Specifically, the rules indicate that the burning of wood is not allowed.

“There are some concerns from residents that we’re being too harsh because they have large properties and like campfires,” said Mayor Chris Pieper.

“We encourage people to use other technology, such as gels and propane. It may not be as good an atmosphere because there’s no smoke but you can still cook.”

The bylaw could be adopted at the August council meeting.
