Campfires are being banned in Lake Country and the North Westside area as of Friday at noon.

Campfires are being extinguished in Lake Country and the North Westside area.

As of Friday at noon, fire chiefs are banning campfires in all Central Okanagan municipalities and electoral areas.

“It will remain in effect until further notice,” said Bruce Smith, with the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

The ban is a result of extremely dry conditions in the area and the potential for wildfires.

Violators could receive a fine and be charged the cost of the fire department response to a burning complaint.

“Fire departments throughout the Central Okanagan remind residents and visitors that all smoking materials should be carefully snuffed out and motorists are reminded not to toss cigarettes or other smoking materials from their vehicle,” said Smith.
