Closure meeting cancelled

School district will not proceed with April 11 session on Armstrong Elementary

A public meeting about possible school closures has been cancelled.

In early March, the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District announced public consultation April 11 in Armstrong to discuss proposed closures of two elementary schools. However, a recent decision to defer the process for a year means those sessions are now scrapped.

“There will be nothing further this spring regarding school closures,” said Glenn Borthistle, superintendent.

However, officials will get together with residents on other matters.

“There will be consultations on the proposed changes at Ranchero and Silver Creek becoming a kindergarten to Grade 8 school, and a consultation in Sicamous regarding the kindergarten to Grade 12 proposal,” said Borthistle.

The configuration of some schools is being considered as the district addresses a $1.3 million budget shortfall.

Task forces will be created to review demographic information, school configurations and catchment areas in Armstrong.
