Coldstream considers Rail Trail preparation and Kalamalka Lake Lookout work

Lack of maintenance at Kal Lookout and future rail trail prompt district to look at forming a standing committee to address issues

Coldstream is on the lookout for a solution to preserve some of its finest landmarks.

The lack of maintenance at the Kalamalka Lake Lookout as well as the future rail trail have prompted the district to look at forming a standing committee to address issues.

“There are issues we know are going to come up,” said Coun. Doug Dirk. “When that rail trail is up and going full bore there’s going to be issues. So let’s get on it and deal with them.”

How the trail will impact area accommodations, parking, signage are just a few of the concerns Coldstream anticipates.

Meanwhile, there is also concern for an existing gem - the Kalamalka Lake Lookout.

Overgrown weeds, dying trees, garbage and sparse grass are what’s left of the lookout after $58,000 in upgrades were made at the site just last fall.

Therefore Coldstream is investigating what it might cost to take over maintenance of the site, since there currently isn’t much.

The existing contract will be looked at between the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the contractor for the maintenance. A report will be brought back to council on the projected labour and equipment costs if Coldstream were to maintain the lookout.
