Enderby’s John Pavelich (centre) receives a B.C. Community Achievement Award from Community Development Minister Peter Fassbender and Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon Wednesday.

John Pavelich soaked up the praise, but then it was back to Enderby and his volunteer work.

Pavelich received a B.C. Community Achievement Award in Victoria Wednesday, and then drove all night because of a full schedule of activities that awaited him Thursday morning.

“He’s a pretty amazing guy. He just doesn’t let up,” said Greg McCune, Enderby mayor.

The retired teacher has been in Enderby since 1967 and he keeps busy with the Enderby Lions Club and lends a hand elsewhere in the community.

He organizes garage sales and pancake breakfasts and has helped with the development of the Lions Gazebo and tennis courts.

“If they (Lions) have a discussion about something, he just starts it,” said McCune.

“He will do anything in the community.”

Pavelich admits he was surprised to be recognized by the B.C. Achievement Foundation.

“It was very special,” said the 78-year-old.

“I was really touched by the support I got. I was very humbled.”

Presenting the award were Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon and Community Development Minister Peter Fassbender.

“I accept it on behalf of all of the community members in Enderby past and present. They inspire me,” said Pavelich.

“This little town buzzes every day. My family also supports me a lot and allows me to participate.”

And while he has been recognized provincially, Pavelich insists he won’t slow down because he gets so much back from volunteering.

“It’s rewarding to see a smile on people’s faces when you help them out,” he said.
