Fairbairn back as White Valley chairperson

White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee ready for 2016

There are no changes in leadership when it comes to recreation in Cherryville and Lumby.

Rick Fairbairn, rural Lumby director, has been acclaimed to another one-year term as chairperson of the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee.

“We will carry on with all of the good projects we have in the draft 2016 budget,” said Fairbairn, adding that the committee provides critical services to residents.

“Good recreation is important for the health of the community.”

Randal Ostafichuk, Lumby director, will serve again as vice-chairperson, while the other member of the committee is Hank Cameron, Cherryville director.

Committee meetings will continue to be held at the Village of Lumby office but there is also a plan to hold some meetings at WVPRCAC facilities, such as the White Valley Community Centre, and in Cherryville.

“It would allow for communication with the people at the facilities,” said Cameron, adding that such a move would also allow directors to be more familiar with the amenities and what community programs are offered.

Hockeyville gets support

Elected officials are rallying around efforts to name Lumby Kraft Hockeyville.

The White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee has decided to provide $600 to those organizing the bid to have Lumby short-listed as one of the 10 communities competing for the title.

“It requires a lot of community engagement,” said Tannis Nelson, WVPRCAC community development co-ordinator.

The money can go towards a community event Feb. 8 or for signs that encourage people to get behind the Hockeyville campaign.

The online nomination competition is underway, and runs until midnight, Feb. 7. From all eligible entries received, judges will select a top-10 which will be announced on a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast on Sportsnet March 5.

When the top-10 is announced, legal residents of Canada 13 and over can begin voting for their favourite entry.

The two entries with the most votes will be finalists for the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2016.

The winner will host an NHL pre-season game and get $100,000 in upgrades for the local arena.
