Local school districts are getting an infusion of cash for transportation.
The provincial government is providing the Vernon district with $361,094 while the North Okanagan-Shuswap is getting $561,925.
“Transportation to and from school is a very big part of delivering a great educational experience to our kids,” said Greg Kyllo, Shuswap MLA.
The Vernon district will use the funding to:
* Ensure the district does not have to charge fees for eligible student bus riders.
* Upgrade radio communications to help ensure buses are able to communicate with the district office.
* Enhance student safety by developing a student bus safety program, implementing a student bus pass system to monitor load and unload locations and supporting crossing guard volunteers with equipment.
“I think a student bus pass system will give parents peace of mind with respect to the safety of their children,” said Eric Foster, Vernon-Monashee MLA.
“Parents will also welcome the news that bus fees will not be implemented, meaning one less cost strain on their wallets.”
In the North Okanagan-Shuswap, the funding will go towards:
* Enhance services by adding new bus routes and reducing ride times.
* Improve bus safety by providing more accessibility for students with special needs.
* Reduce walk limits
* Increase supervision on buses and provide additional safety training for staff.
* Hire additional staff for the school district transportation department.
* Offset other cost pressures in the transportation budget.
