Future of Paddlewheel trees unknown

Questions arise over the jurisdiction of roadside trees - RDNO or the City of Vernon

There are calls to cut back the trees along Okanagan Landing Road at Paddlewheel Park.

Who is responsible for landscaping at a popular park is uncertain.

Regional District of North Okanagan directors decided Wednesday that more information is required on whether trees and bushes come under RDNO’s jurisdiction at Paddlewheel Park or if they are in City of Vernon road allowance.

“We need to clarify that,” said director Juliette Cunningham.

The city had recently asked that landscaping be trimmed to allow for lake views, but the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee had recommended to the RDNO board that no action be taken.

While jurisdiction for the trees along Okanagan Landing Road is being determined, director Brian Quiring insists something needs to be done.

“You go by the park and it looks like a pile of junk,” he said, adding that the overgrown vegetation allows criminal activity to occur.

“You can’t see the lake or the boat launch. Vehicles could be broken into there.”

Quiring insists there is a need for a couple of view corridors.

“The intent is not to mow all of the trees down.”
