Motorist's actions keep fire from spreading

On Wednesday, a motorist noticed flames coming from the deck of a house on Heritage Drive.

A Good Samaritan kept a Vernon house fire from getting out of control.

On Wednesday at about 9:47 a.m., a motorist noticed flames coming from the deck of a house in the 4700 block of Heritage Drive.

“The witness banged on the door, notified the tenant and the tenant grabbed the garden hose,” sid Jack Blair, Vernon fire chief.

“He was able to knock it down.”

Firefighters ensured the blaze was completely out and they vented the building.

“There is minor smoke damage to the interior,” said Blair.

The cause of the fire is believed to be smoking material.
