Local school districts are trying to determine how financial savings will be spent.
The provincial government announced Tuesday that $302,206 will go to the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District and $382,586 will go to the Vernon School District for classroom programs, hiring new teachers or busing.
“The board will determine where the funding will go but it’s one-time funding,” said Sterling Olson, Vernon secretary-treasurer.
School districts have been informed by Victoria that they will not have to pay their share of $25 million worth of provincial charges this year, and instead can redirect that money into frontline services for students.
Given that the funding is for this year only, Olson wouldn’t speculate on what the money will mean for the classroom.
“Programs and services must be sustainable,” he said.
The North Okanagan-Shuswap school board will discuss its funding allotment in June.
