Pressure is growing on the federal government to scrap a tax on a tax.
On Monday, North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold tabled a petition in the House of Commons initiated by Vernon Coun. Bob Spiers that seeks to end the application of federal goods and services tax on carbon taxes.
“Now that the federal government has mandated that all provinces and territories establish a carbon tax regime by 2018, all Canadians will soon be subjected to this tax-on-tax scheme,” said Arnold.
“I commend Coun. Spiers for stepping forward with this important proposal and I will continue to fight this unfair tax scheme.”
The online e-petition received 1,596 signatures from across Canada between January and May and will now be assessed by the federal government, which will issue a formal written response within 45 days.
MP Arnold has also been active in supporting MP Mark Warawa’s Bill C-342, which also seeks to end the tax on a tax.
