Armstrong council is raising its awareness of radon.
After being informed the city is in the region of B.C. considered to have high radon risk potential, council voted to purchase some radon kits for testing in councillors’ homes.
“We want to get some ideas about what’s being talked about,” said Mayor Chris Pieper.
Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, occurring naturally as a decay product of radium.
The B.C. Building Code has said all new home construction in B.C.’s high radon-potential area must include a roughed-in radon vent pipe.
“Our building inspector has confirmed that this is enforced and staff has taken the initiative to include a brochure on radon awareness in the building permit application package,” said Coun. Steven Drapala.
Council gave three readings to a business licence bylaw amendment that would provide the authority and protection to ensure the city has the authority to not licence an illegal business activity.
The city plans to add “that the proposed business would not be carried out in contravention of the Criminal Code of Canada or the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act” to the bylaw.
Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation Commission was successful in applying for a provincial grant of up to $10,000 to assess the use of reclaimed water for the spray park next to the swimming pool in Memorial Park.
Workshops will be held to go over the detailed first drafts it has received about its master water plan and its landscape design and beautification project.
Council witnessed hour-long presentations on both topics at its regular committee meetings.
The city has announced its Christmas schedule. City hall will be closed to the public between Monday, Dec. 26 through to and including Dec. 30.
It will reopen for business Jan. 2. Only one council meeting is scheduled for December — Dec. 12.
