Rash of thefts from vehicles leads to arrest

Vernon RCMP were kept busy over the weekend dealing with a heavy rash of thefts from vehicles.

They caught a break – and a suspect – Monday morning.

“Since Saturday night, our officers responded to between 12 and 15 thefts from vehicles, mostly in the area of Bella Vista Road, Southwind Road and the area towards Okanagan Landing,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

On Monday morning, police arrested a 23-year-old man at an apartment complex in the 3900 block of 27th Avenue after residents phoned in to report a car alarm going off after the vehicle was broken into.

The suspect, said Molendyk, was on conditions not to be out of the province of Alberta. He remains in custody as police continue to investigate.

“We anticipate more calls will be coming as numerous items were seized from the suspect when he was arrested,” said Molendyk.

“Our officers haven’t been able to put the items back to the thefts that have already been reported.”
