Skateboarders currently use the facilities in Polson Park but they may eventually be allowed to use sidewalks legally.

Skateboards could ultimately be allowed on sidewalks depending on what residents say.

Vernon council has directed staff to launch public consultation on proposed bylaw changes that would allow small-wheeled transport, such as skateboards, to on sidewalks and certain roads.

"I would like to see wider consultation," said Coun. Scott Anderson, who was concerned with staff's initial recommendation that input only be sought from certain groups.

"Pedestrians don't form groups but they have an interest in sidewalks."

Some residents have suggested skateboards encourage alternate forms of transportation while others are concerned about safety around pedestrians.

Support for broadening the process came from Coun. Catherine Lord.

"It would be good if there is consultation with more of the pedestrian public," she said.

While Coun. Brian Quiring voted to seek public input, he expressed concerns about the scope of the initiative.

"Do we have to go through this for something insignificant?" he said.

"It's not the best use of staff's valuable time."

Mayor Akbal Mund says the issue needs to be addressed and based on feedback at a Sunshine Festival booth, he is convinced there is support to change the rules.

"Eighty per cent don't care if there are skateboards on sidewalks," he said.
