Stay vigilant; prevent thefts this holiday season: Vernon RCMP

Keeping the Grinch at bay can be as simple as locking the car door

No one likes a Grinch. Especially the RCMP.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP released a statement reminding shoppers to stay vigilant and “protect those with sticky fingers from making off with our holiday cheer.”

Tis the season for thefts from vehicles, or thefts of packages from front steps, the RCMP said.

But there are a few things you can do to prevent it:

Lock your vehicle doors, and don’t leave anything valuable in there.

  • When winterizing your recreational vehicles, make sure you remove the propane tanks and store them somewhere secure.
  • If you’re expecting a package delivery, arrange for it to be made while you’re home, or enlist help from your neighbours.
  • Make sure your house is locked and secure if you’re leaving. Let your trusted neighbours know your plans.
  • Keep an eye on your community. If you see suspicious activity, report it to your local police.

“These few simple steps will help us all enjoy this holiday season.” media spokeswoman Const Jocelyn Noseworthy said. “Help us prevent crime by taking some simple steps to remove those easy opportunities, and report criminal activity to the police or CrimeStoppers.”
