Track landscaping comes under fire

Doug Dirk wants information on maintenance at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

A multi-million-dollar facility looks rough around the edges, according to one politician.

Director Doug Dirk told the Regional District of North Okanagan board Wednesday that he wants information on who is looking after maintenance at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

"It's been very poor so I want some attention brought to it," he said of the landscaping at the perimeter of the track.

"There's weeds and long grass and some of the trees didn't make it."

Concerns about landscaping come shortly after the final cost for the facility was released.

The final price tag was $8.5 million, well above the $7.5 million originally borrowed after a referendum.

Dirk admits some residents may question what is happening at the track, particularly given the landscaping.

"It doesn't give us any credibility," he said.
