The Vernon Winter Carnival will roll the dice and be game to put on a great event in 2024.

The Carnival society has announced Games! will be the theme for the event next year.

“Games of all kinds: board games, sport games, dice, cards, parlour games, video games, you name it,” said Carnival executive director Kris Fuller.

The Winter Carnival has had a theme since 1985 for the 10-day festival.

“Since 1985, we haven’t repeated a theme,” said Carnival chair Laurell Cornell. “It’s challenging and fun trying to find new ones now. I think Games! will be amazing, and I’m excited to see what people do with it.”

Residents are encouraged to dress up in the theme during the Carnival, and especially for the kick-off parade on the first Saturday of the event (Feb. 3, 2024).

“If you are entering our parade, we hope to see your creative side,” said Fuller. “In the past we have seen floats that will knock your socks off.”

A $500 cash prize – the Christel Cam Award – goes to the float with the best Carnival spirit.

There are many ways to get involved with the Vernon Winter Carnival theme, besides the parade.

You can enter, for free, the ‘Best Decorated’ contest. Businesses, clubs and schools can choose to decorate using the annual theme.

Best Decorated proudly hosts these five categories:

•Painted window professional painter(s);

•Painted window amateur painter(s);

•Window display;

•Interior decor;

• Costumes/characters/performance.

Vernon Winter Carnival sends judges around to admire your creativity, and of course, select its favorites. Trophies and certificates are awarded to participants and winners in the spirit of Carnival.

“You can host an event at your business or club,” said Fuller. “Or if you are an individual or group of friends, you can put together an event as well. If you’ve got the idea, and need a little help, reach out (to Fuller). There are contests to take part in such as posters, colouring and essay. If you have ideas we would love to hear them.”

The society currently has a 50-50 raffle online, with your chance to win up to $10,000. Draw date is June 28; must be 19 years to play. You can purchase tickets at https://linktr.ee/vernonwintercarnival
