December 23, 1929 - June 23, 2020
Ab was born on December 23rd, 1929 in Vernon, B.C. and passed away on June 23rd, 2020 while staying in the short stay unit at the Gateby Care Residence. He was so proud of the fact that he was born here and was a member of a pioneer family which dates back to the 1890s. Ab was blessed to have lived his entire life here and witnessed so many changes in the city of Vernon over the span of almost 91 years.
Ab will be lovingly remembered by one son, Ron (Lynn) of Vernon, B.C.; one daughter, Linda (Scott) of Kelowna, B.C.; and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen in 1997; one son, Gordon in 1977; his second wife, Jill in 2007; one sister and four brothers.
Ab was always a very outgoing, happy and friendly man who loved people. He possessed a very keen sense of humour and was happiest when he could make others smile. Ab was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #25 and the Schubert Centre. He enjoyed the time he spent socializing with the Schubert Centre "coffee gang" - which met religiously six days a week! Being there gave Ab purpose and a place to go where he had a connection and belonging.
He was very proud of his long career in the lumber business. He began in this profession when he was 18 years of age and was employed with various building supply companies in Vernon over a span of almost 50 years. Ab loved traveling and he enjoyed several trips to places that brought him the thrill of seeing the history and beauty of the "old world." He was a lover of all things that had batteries, working parts or needed to be plugged in. His nickname should have been "Mr. Gadget!"
We take comfort thinking about what joy he must have experienced when he finished his life's race, he was able to again see all those he loved who had completed their race before him. He will be forever loved and remembered, bringing us all smiles and happy memories.
In respecting Ab's wishes, he was cremated and there will be no services held at this time. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Ab to either the Schubert Centre, 3505-30th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 2E6 or the Canadian Diabetic Association, #306-1385 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. V6H 3V9.
