1932 - 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, wife and grandmother, Carmela Cuglietta after a courageous battle with cancer. Carmela was born in San Nicola, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1957 to settle in New Hazelton with her husband, Giovanni Cuglietta.

It was in this small interior community that Carmela raised her family, Rita and Lino. In 1982 Carmela and Giovanni moved to Vernon where they built their dream home in the Mission Hill area and where they lived until they moved into an apartment in 2008.

Carmela was known for her feisty attitude, generous heart and great sense of humour. Throughout her life she modeled a strong work ethic and unfailing commitment to her family. Carmela prided herself on meticulous housekeeping skills where one could literally eat off her floors. She was a stellar homemaker and spent many years planting and harvesting a showcase garden surrounded by a manicured landscape that she joyfully maintained.

The greatest love of her life was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and would sparkle at the mere sound of their voices. Her grandchildren could always be reassured that with any visit, they would be filling their tummies with some of their favourites and their empty pockets feeling heavier. Carmela also valued her friendships and would always remind us to not take good relationships for granted. Carmela possessed a deep sense of respect for everyone and taught us to accept people for who they are.

Deepest gratitude goes out to Dr. Arnold for his many years of expert support, as well as his staff, Donna, Joanne and Patti. The family would also like to thank Dr. Spawlinski, Dr. Secratan, Dr. Kader the nurses at VJH, the staff and volunteers at the VJH Cancer Clinic, Franceso Cuglietta and Nella and Sauro Banducci.

Carmela will live fondly within the hearts of her husband Giovanni Cuglietta, children Rita (Victor), Lino (Cathy) and her grandchildren, Christina, Niquita, Diego, Nikko and Danica. She is further survived by her brother-in-law Francesco Cuglietta, sisters-in-law Genoveffa Cuglietta and Nina Pontillo and, several nephews and nieces.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, September 5, 2016 at St. James Church at 5:30 PM. A Funeral Mass for Carmela will be Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. James Church with reception to follow.

Be at peace, mom until we meet again.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
