It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Bette) May Shumay at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, one month shy of her 95th birthday.
Bette was born in Calgary, Alta. and began her career as a Psychiatric Nurse at Essondale in Coquitlam, BC. which would later be re-named Riverview.
In the early 50's, she transferred to Vernon's Dellview Hospital until her retirement. It was while nursing in Vernon she met and married Nick Shumay, who predeceased her on Nov. 18, 1995.
Shortly after marriage they purchased a small farm with acreage on Silver Star Road which they enjoyed together for many years. After her husband's passing, she remained living there until it became too much for her to handle. She sold the property and moved into Carrington Place.
During their life together, Uncle Nick and Aunt Bette also spent many happy times at the cabin they built on the Enderby end of Mabel Lake.
BC Cancer, WAR AMPS, BC SPCA, Red Cross and Heart and Stroke
Foundation were just a few of the many charities Aunt Bette regularly donated to. She was a member of Schubert Centre where she enjoyed many luncheons with friends. She also signed up for day trips on the centres bus which took her to many interesting places in and around the Okanagan.
Spring was a special time for Aunt Bette to visit the local gardening centres in search of new plants to be re-planted on her property on Silver Star Road.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for their care and support during Aunt Bette's stay.
Due to COVID 19 restrictions there is no service planned at this time.
