With sad and thankful hearts, we announce the passing of Hedy into the waiting arms of her Lord at the age of 85 years. Hedy is survived by her husband Richard; daughter Teresa; son Bruce; daughter-in-law Christine; and beloved grandchildren, Zachary, Micah and Rachel; brother Walter (Karen) Ratzlaff; and sister Dorothy (Alvin) Balzer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erhard and Hulda Ratzlaff.
Hedy was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada as a young girl. Here she helped her family get accustomed to a new land. Clearbrook, B.C. became home and Hedy completed High School at the Mennonite Educational Institute. Following her love for children and learning, she entered teacher training in Vancouver and was hired by Surrey Public School. Hedy married Richard and the couple followed employment opportunities from Walkerton, Ontario, Seattle, Washington and Winnipeg, Manitoba until when in 1983, they settled in Vernon, B.C.
Hedy always had a friendly smile and a warm, loving heart. As a result of frequent moves, Hedy always desired to make connections with people. Family and a faith community were essential to starting over again in a new location. Once settled in Vernon, Hedy attended Vernon Alliance Church where she sought ways to serve in whatever way she could. She cared specifically for the disadvantaged and homeless and enjoyed serving at the Upper Room Mission Store for a significant number of years. Hedy enjoyed skiing and recreation. A yearly highlight was hosting her grandchildren each Christmas and these were cherished as highly significant annual family times. In her last days, many medical professionals cared for Hedy and the family are so grateful for their gracious care.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Vernon Alliance Church on Saturday, September 17th, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Dave MacPhee officiating. Interment will take place in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery following the Reception in the Church Fellowship Hall. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Hedy to the Upper Room Mission Society, 3403-27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S2.
