In loving memory ~
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our Mother and Grandmother, Lorna Daly Barton, at Eden Homes in Weyburn, SK.
She is survived by her son, Brian (Lori) Barton and their sons, Howie (Ashley) Barton and Jake Barton, Vernon BC; her son Rob (Lori) Barton, Vernon BC. She is also survived by her brother Jim (Hilda) McGowan, Weyburn, SK; her sister Joan Schneider, Regina, SK; her niece Pam Mark and Pam's children Brendan and Hannah Mark, Grand Rapids, MN; and her "Sister By Choice" cousin Doreen Leslie, Weyburn, SK.
Mom was born in the Weyburn Hospital, to Norman and Mable McGowan, on Dec. 5, 1941. She grew up on the family farm East of Weyburn. She enjoyed farm life, but especially loved horseback riding! She also loved dogs and Siamese cats, math and reading, playing softball and bowling, and music and singing.
While Mom was successful at most things she undertook, it was academically where she shone brightest. She loved school and it showed! Her scholastic achievements, participation in school activities, and public speaking ability earned her a Rotarian trip to Ottawa in May of 1958. She was very proud to have been one of only seven Saskatchewan students selected for this honor. The following month, Mom completed Grade 12 and graduated from Weyburn Collegiate Institute at age 16. Her education and strength with numbers would serve her well, as she spent most of her working life in the banking industry.
Our family moved to Vernon, BC in 1970, where Mom started work as a teller at the Vernon Credit Union. Her abilities were obvious and she was quickly promoted to Cash Manager, a position that she held for over a decade.
Her commitment to family was never more evident than in 1985, when she moved back to Saskatchewan to help care for her aging parents. At that time, she accepted a job as a data entry clerk at SGI. She soon worked her way up to the title of Insurance Adjuster, a position that she held until her retirement.
Mom's last few years were spent at Eden Homes, in Weyburn. We would like to express our gratitude to William and Carmen Bilagot and their daughters Jessica and Laura for their dedication to our Mom. You not only provided exemplary care, but welcomed her into your family. Mom particularly enjoyed Jessica and Laura, often stating, "I never had any daughters, but I would have spoiled these girls rotten!" THANK YOU BILAGOT FAMILY, we were fortunate to have you.
With the approval of her big brother Jim, on Aug. 31 Mom was interred next to her father. We think she would have liked that.
