June 6, 1935 - September 18, 2021
Maxine was born on Vancouver Island in Alert Bay, B.C., June 6th, 1935 to parents Muriel and William, a school teacher. She has two siblings, Bill and Margaret (Turner).
Maxine spent the early part of her life on the Island and in the central interior of B.C., finishing up school in the Kelowna area.
In 1954 she met and married Vancouver-based CBC cameraman, Raymond Atkinson. Following the births of two sons, Mike in 1955 and Terry in 1957, the family moved to Southern California, where Randy was born in 1959.
After divorcing in 1967, Maxine received training as an x-ray technician, and then in ultrasound. In 1978, Maxine moved back to B.C., buying a house on Tronson Road overlooking the Okanagan Lake, where she lived until her passing on September 18th, 2021. Upon returning to B.C., she worked for several years at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital as an ultrasound technician before retiring.
Though most would not make the connection, car enthusiasts would recognize her as the owner/driver of an original green 1970 Chevelle Malibu, which would be seen year-round on the streets of Vernon.
Maxine loved the Okanagan. She marvelled daily that she could live in such a place. Never tiring of the view of the lake, and maintaining a beautiful garden, provided her with pleasure and peace. Maxine was dedicated to her family and friends. She was gracious with her time and was continuously active in her church community.
She had a lifelong faith and clearly now is with the Lord. She will be greatly missed and we bless her memory.
A Graveside Service was held at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery on Friday, October 1st, 2021 at 10 am with Pastor Cliff Siebert from The Landing Church officiating.
