Mel passed away suddenly at the age of 81 at his home in Victoria, BC, on Dec. 7. Born in Vernon, he attended school in Vernon and Barriere and later went on to UBC where he earned his degree in psychology. After graduation in 1964, he was hired as probation officer by BC Corrections in Victoria. In 1997, as Director of the Victoria Probation Office and after 33 years of public service, he retired. Mel was then able to focus on the world of finance and economics, an interest which kept him busy for the rest of his life. Mel had many passions in life, such as his 1980's Oldsmobile, dancing, and fly fishing. He also had a strong connection to wildlife and the outdoors, taking annual fishing trips to Knouff and Heffley Lakes. Mel's easy-going and trustworthy nature made him a wonderful friend to many. A man of integrity, kindness and humility, Mel will be lovingly remembered and missed by all who knew him. A memorial bench sits on a bluff overlooking Spectacle Lake, just outside Victoria, where Mel spent many hours fishing. He placed the bench there several years ago for fellow fishermen, or anyone, to sit and take in the beauty of the Lake. Mel invites you to stop by anytime to say hi.
