Bravo Vertigo

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Brigitte Red and others, Gallery Vertigo has a new home. Vertigo occupies a special place in the North Okanagan which isn’t always recognized.

As an artist-run gallery operating under the non-profit North Okanagan Artist Alternative, it’s not to be confused with a commercial art gallery.

It was founded by a group of local artists with a mandate to provide a place for emerging and mid career artists to hone their skills and exhibit their works.

It was at Vertigo where I occupied a studio for nine years and that I began to call myself an artist and a poet.

Vertigo has been very much in the community with the annual high school exhibition and the Smarties program for children

Vertigo was a labour of love for the various artists who inhabited the upper floor of the old Union Bank building.

Not to downplay the efforts of others during and after her tenure, but I have to acknowledge that the tremendous dedication and may hours of unpaid labour of Judith Jurica is the reason there is a Gallery Vertigo today.

Vertigo has been a place for the arts - all the arts. John Lent gave us the literary reading series Vertigo Voices. Local and travelling musicians made music there.

Vernon has something special here. Support the arts.
