Family praises the North Westside Fire Department and hospital personnel

On Dec. 15 at 1 a.m., I discovered my husband Ken unconscious and I couldn't wake him.

I called 911 and the operator stayed on the line with me until North Westside Fire Rescue arrived at my door. These volunteers, who probably have day jobs, got out of their warm beds in the middle of the night to help me and my husband.  They kept talking to Ken and calling him by name, so if he was aware of them, he knew they were there to help.

They moved furniture, were prepared to shovel snow if needed and to help the ambulance get the gurney into the house and out again to take Ken to the hospital. Before they left, they put everything back the way it was and told me that if I need anything, do not hesitate to call as they were available to help. Ken was transported to Kelowna General Hospital.

I, Ken and our two children, Cassandra and Travis, were treated with care and compassion. All of the doctors, nurses and support staff in both emergency and ICU were so wonderful. Unfortunately, Ken did not survive, but he was cared for until the final moment Dec. 17.

There is not a big enough thank you to all these wonderful people.
