Resident urges the public to pay more attention to the education system

"Assert your rights, parents and taxpayers"

Bobbi Fox and I have taken divergent paths in the past on issues, but in this instance, she has very succinctly identified the obvious need for people in this area to get a lot more involved in how their tax dollars are being spent or misspent.

The ratio of students to classroom capacity cited in her letter speaks volumes about the allocation of educational resources, and how that current allocation, while beneficial to the B.C. Teachers Federation, is a disservice to areas of the educational experience that are sorely in need of those funds e.g. "whether the school will have a librarian, special activities or classes, an outdoor education facilitator, or whether they have busing for children within a certain number of kilometres in the fiercest time of the winter."

The logistical costs of how funds are being allocated, if Bobbi Fox's numbers are correct, is a slap in the face to the parents and taxpayers of the Vernon School District.

I was gratified to note at a recent Vernon city council meeting, that there was almost a full capacity of attendees to witness and participate in how their tax dollars were going to be directed.

It behooves the parents and taxpayers to emulate those levels of attendance at school board meetings.

The excuse of, "I haven't got time," for not attending has extreme financial repercussions for you, and an educational marginalization for your children.
