In 2022, it’s an office building.
But back in the 1970s and 80s, there once was a building in Vernon that housed several variations of restaurants.
The building is where the Sterling Centre is today, home to Remedy’s RX Pharmacy, dental and doctor offices, just off 25th Avenue, a block west of Polson Park.
As the photo from Museum and Archives of Vernon shows, there was a restaurant there whose feature was roasted chicken. There was also a Texas-themed restaurant in the location.
But perhaps the best-known and well-loved restaurant house there was The Pyrogy House, owned and operated by Steve (Senior) and Anna Fonyo. Their son, Stephen, gained fame in 1985 for running across Canada to raise money for cancer research after losing his leg to the disease as a child.
Anna Fonyo passed away in Kelowna this month, just a couple of months after the death of her son.
