Mustangs fall in overtime

The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs needed a win Saturday at home to keep their season alive.

The hometown West Kelowna Warriors scored a 5-4 overtime win Friday in Game 1 of the Okanagan Pee Wee Tier 2 Hockey League championship final.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series went Saturday afternoon at the Vernon Civic Arena.

The Okanagan champ will advance to the provincial finals March 19-23 in Trail.

Bennett Kuhnlein got the Mustangs on the board 64 seconds into the first period.

After falling behind 3-1 early in the third, Vernon got goals from Erik Pastro, JJ Milne and Jarred Feist to take a 4-3 lead.

West Kelowna tied it with eight minutes left in the third, setting up the second OT game of these playoffs for the Mustangs.

The Warriors ended it two minutes into the extra session. Austin Seibel was solid in taking the loss.

In Midget House Super League action Friday, Vernon Talon Benefits Thrashers stayed unbeaten in the playoffs with a 7-0 romp over the Salmon Arm Lakeside Printing Sting at the Shaw Centre.

Jaden Steinke scored three time for the regular season champions, who take on the Vernon Authentic Plaque and Trophy Hawks in a championship semifinal this afternoon at the Winfield Arena.

Michael Pusey added two goals for the Thrashers while singles went to Chris Niehusmann and Mac Gilchrist. Goalies Garrett Adams and Isaac Waldemaras shared the shutout. The other semifinal in Winfield has the host Bruins taking on the Vernon Corbett Office Plus Kings. The two winners meet in the final Monday at the Priest Valley Arena (6:45 p.m.).
