Smokin’ hot day on the track for Okanagan elementary athletes

The District Track Meet was held on June 7-8 at Kelowna’s Apple Bowl Stadium

Speedy, strong and smart students from across the Okanagan laced up for two days of competition at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.

The Central Okanagan School District Track Meet was a success for those in Grades 4, 5 and 6.

The thermometer rose above 30 C on the sweltering track, but that did not slow these stars down.

One Grade 6 athlete from Watson Road Elementary said, “I am tired, hot and I have a headache,” while grinning ear-to-ear after competing in the long jump competition.

Some gold medal champions from H.S. Grenda Middle School had some tips to beat the heat.

“Drink lots and lots of water,” said one triple jump champion, while a long jump champion said to “wear sunscreen.”

The 100m gold medal winner said that she brought a spray fan to help keep cool throughout the day.
