Teams in the zone for AA hoop title

The VSS Panthers stormed the Kalamalka Lakers 85-38 Saturday night to finish the regular season first at 6-0. The Lakers were third at 2-4.

The Fulton Maroons ended up second at 4-2 after ambushing the Pleasant Valley Saints 79-34 Saturday night in Armstrong.

Game MVP Tavia Lochhead flushed 29 points for the Maroons, while Amanda Sakamoto canned 23. The Saints got nine points from Zetteh Gunner.

“Tavia (Lochhead) really took control from the beginning,” said Fulton coach Jim Inglis. “She hit for 12 first-quarter points, she led the break, she rebounded at both ends and she took care of the ball.”

Fulton meets Kal (5:15) and the Panthers meet the Saints (8:45) Friday night.

In senior boys action, the Lakers played a solid two-way game while dismantling the Panthers 69-48 Saturday night.

VSS showed lots of improvement and were led by some hot outside shooting. Kal was led by an inspired performance from Kevin Pontious and consistent scoring from Max Wilford and Alex Steinley.

Fulton brushed back PVSS 71-60 Saturday night to win the city title at 6-0. PVSS was second at 4-2, followed by Kal at 2-4. VSS was 0-6.

In the junior girls North Zone playdowns, Fulton pulled a minor upset by defeating VSS 41-38 Saturday. Sam Ferrier dialed up 16 points, and Hana Ouchi pocketed 11.

The Maroons opened by defeating Salmon Arm Jewels 41-30. Ferrier had a dozen points, while Ouchi canned 10 and Olson had seven.

“The Fulton girls came to play and probably had their best game of the season,” said Maroons’ teacher-sponsor Jacqueline Olson.

Fulton opens the Valley playdowns today in Princeton against the Kelowna Owls, while VSS meets the Rutland Voodoos.
