Vernon high school students shine at maiden track and field meet

Athletes from Vernon Christian School competed, and shone, at the B.C. School Sports AA Track and Field Meet in Abbotsford.

It was the first time that VCS ever took part in the Abbotsford meet, which featured athletes from grades 8-12 on Thursday, April 25.

In the senior boys 4 x 100 metre and 4 x 400 m relay, the quartet of Jaden Overend, Ben Tishenko, Tristian Thompson and Emerson Overend claimed double gold in both events.

“All our athletes did great, and we had a lot of top eight finishes,” said Savaya Hofsink, the school’s admissions and advacement coordinator. “This is VCS’s first time competing in this competition we are very proud of all our athletes for competing and representing our school and Christ so well!”

The team also racked up numerous other top eight finishes:

  • Nolan Smith – 200 m (sixth), 800 m (fifth), long jump (second)
  • Caleb Smith – 100 m (eighth), Javelin (third)
  • Jake Funk - Long jump (fifth)
  • Paisley Wallace - Long jump (sixth), triple jump (fourth)
  • Gabi Koebel – 400 m (eighth)
  • Jacob Leyenhorst - 100 m (seventh), 200 m (seventh)
  • Leah Funk - 400 m hurdles (second), long jump (second)
  • Emerson Overend - long jump (second)
  • Rebecca Sawatzky – 400 m (fifth), long jump (fifth)
  • Tristian Thompson - 200 m (fourth), long jump (eighth), triple jump (second)
  • Ben Tishenko – 100 m (fifth), long jump (seventh place), triple jump (third)
  • Grade 8 boys - 4 x 100 m relay of Zack Reid, Jack Bielby, Nolan Smith, and Caleb Smith (seventh)

The next track meet for VCS is Tuesday, May 7 in Kamloops.
