Vernon rowers win Lap the Lake at home

Jonas Masys claimed a new course record, while Danica Ariano grabbed a bronze

Swan Lake was filled with rowers over the weekend, as the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club (VRDBC) hosted their annual Lap the Lake Regatta.

The event, hosted on Saturday, June 17, saw 74 rowers across 38 crews compete.

Competitors took part in a 3,650 metre head race on a triangle-shaped course.

The quickest overall time, 15:02.84, was recorded by a composite crew in the men’s junior double scull category. Vernon’s Jonas Masys and Brayden Davis (Fort Langley), rowing together for the first time, secured a new course record and the golden blade award.

Richard Fergie from Terrace, competing as an independent participant, finished second with a time of 15:46.38.

Third overall was earned by the women’s open double scull team from the University of Victoria, composed of VRDBC graduate Danica Ariano and Danae McCulloch. The crew crossed the line at 15:53.51.

After the head race, the crews showcased their abilities in a 500-metre sprint race, in eight different classes from singles to quads.

The windy conditions favoured lightweights, as a bevy of crews recorded sub-1:45 finish times.

Among the 74 participants, 38 were junior and senior athletes, while the remaining 36 master rowers brought years of experience to the competition.
