Peter Trafford made the best of home court advantage Sunday, May 1.

The head pro at The Roster Sports Club defeated Shawn Zwierzchowski from Chilliwack 3-1 in the best-of-five Open Final of the 2020 Vernon Optometry Squash Open tournament.

It marked the first time the tournament was held in two years because of COVID.

After the pair split the first two games of the final, Trafford closed things out by winning the next two.

Trafford advanced to the championship with a straight sets 3-0 win and a tough 3-2 victory over his opponent.

Zwierzchowski was undefeated prior to the final, having advanced with a pair of 3-0 wins.

Trafford has been coaching squash since he was 16. Prior to moving to Vernon, he was the assistant pro at the University of Calgary, helping grow the squash program to 200-plus juniors and 100-plus adults in three years.

Competitively, Trafford was a finalist at the Calgary Open in October of 2020, and the Mount Royal University Open, Open Division in February of 2021.
