Vernon’s Alexanne LePage punctuated her incredible rookie university season by helping her Calgary Dinos to a national bronze medal.
The swimmer, who had racked up medals in prior meets, competed at the U Sports National Championship March 7 to 9 in Montreal.
On day one, the U Sports Rookie of the Year grabbed silver in the 100 metre breaststroke and gold in the 400 metre medley with a 4:50.26 time, more than four seconds faster than second place.
LePage teamed up with Eliza Housman, Hannah Bennett and Hannah Johnsen in the 4 x 100 m freestyle, to finish second overall, behind University of Toronto.
Day two saw LePage win gold in the 200 m breaststroke, and a silver in the 4 x 200 m freestyle with her teammates.
The final day, LePage claimed two more silver medals, this time in the 50 m breaststroke and 4 x 100 m medley.
The seven medals in nationals now gave the first year engineering student a whopping 31 medals throughout the school year, 25 of them gold.
The official U Sports season may be over, but LePage will keep competing, including in the inaugural Canadian Swimming Open hosted in Toronto.
The competition (running April 10 to 13) is the newest event added to the 2023-24 national swim calendar and is the final opportunity for athletes to improve their qualifying times ahead of the 2024 Olympic Trials, May 13 to 19.
Top Olympic swimmers from Canada, such as Summer McIntosh, Penny Oleksiak and Maggie Mac Neil, will be present.
