Spreading the holiday spirit to local seniors has always been a tradition of the Halina Seniors Centre.

For as long as members can remember, the Halina Christmas Luncheon has been a holiday mainstay. This year, the well-attended event is set for Dec. 12.

“Ensuring seniors receive a traditional turkey dinner and chance to enjoy the Christmas spirit, the Halina Seniors Centre board decided to offer up an opportunity for seniors to join in the celebration,” said Diana Williamson, interim manager. “Over the years, the event has changed, but the base has remained with good, fun entertainment and camaraderie all while celebrating the season.”

Guests will enjoy turkey, ham and all the trimmings as well as participate in a sing along with Denise, enjoy the intricate moves of the Halina Pattern Dancers, an opportunity to dance along with the Backyard Band and be visited by a very jolly fellow. A 50/50 draw will be held and door prizes are available.

A limited number of tickets are available from the Halina Centre office, located within the Vernon Recreation Complex whose halls will by decked thanks to volunteers, for $15. Tickets are not available at the door. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., the program begins at 12 p.m. and lunch is at 1 p.m.

“With almost 500 members the Halina Centre is a home away from home. We have a straightforward goal ‘to empower older adults to be active, to be involved and to age successfully,’” Williamson said. “The Halina Centre, which is an activity centre for those 50-and-older makes available to its members a variety of programs and activities based on members interests and abilities. We are supported by the active participation of approximately 100 member volunteers who make it all possible.”
