The North Okanagan Hospice Society (NOHS) is reviving its participation in the national Hike for Hospice fundraising event on Sunday, June 5.

NOHS encourages ‘hikers’ of all ages and abilities, as well as their beloved four-legged friends, to come out for this fun community event that begins at Polson Park in Vernon. ‘Hikers’ gather donations and pledges from their supporters to benefit the charity by creating or joining a team at in advance or in person at the event. In person registration begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Polson Park Pavilion.

“We appreciate the tremendous support and participation from our supporters around the region in our previous Hikes for Hospice,” says Lisa Matthews, executive director, NOHS. “The North Okanagan Hospice Society is fortunate to have such great community involvement and we invite everyone to join us once again in taking part in this wonderful event.”

The Hike for Hospice is coordinated in part by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, the national association that provides leadership in hospice palliative and end-of-life care in Canada.

Locally, the funds raised from the hike supports operations and programs at Hospice House where those at end of life and their loved ones are cared for.

“In honor of the Hike’s 20th Anniversary, we felt it was a good time to bring back this nationwide event, to help raise much needed funds for NOHS and we hope supporters will return in 2022 to show their generosity once again,” says Matthews.

There will be food trucks, entertainment, warm up exercises and a short ceremony. Participants can then complete the scenic two-kilometer route twice, if able, to complete the four-km hike.
