It will be a year later than originally planned.
The Vernon Senior Secondary School Class of 1971 will hold its 50-year reunion in the 51st year this summer, Friday, Aug. 12.
The class can add pandemic to its list of memories to talk about, as COVID is the reason the 50th anniversary was cancelled in 2021.
But that’s alright for a class that grew up in the 1960s with the Vietnam War, the British Invasion, watching Ed Sullivan, holding sock hops, going to Teen Town, and, of course, pulling Mainers (driving up and down 30th Avenue Friday and Saturday evenings).
The Class of ‘71 was the third to graduate from the new VSSS on 18th Street.
In 1971, Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the Prime Minister. W.A.C. Bennett was B.C. Premier. The Mayor of Vernon was William Halina.
The Montreal Canadiens stunned the hockey world by winning the Stanley Cup with a rookie goalie named Ken Dryden.
Patton took home the Oscar for Best Picture. George C. Scott, who portrayed the U.S. General, declined his Best Actor Oscar for the role.
The top three songs of 1971, according to the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Charts, were:
No. 1: Joy To The World (Three Dog Night);
No. 2: Maggie May (Rod Stewart);
No. 3: It’s Too Late (Carole King).
The reunion is not just for the graduates of 1971. Also invited are people who may not have graduated or moved away during the year or prior to Grade 12.
